I believe that Hazel dies because the very last words of the magnificent book was „I do Augustus, I do.“ and I would like to like to imagine it as Hazel Grace say I Do in her and Augustus’s wedding. I believe that Hazel dies as soon as she says the words „I do, Augustus. I do.“ because that would actually be a likely ending to the story. Like, Hazel was expecting all the time that Augustus would be speaking at her funeral, but it turns out that finally Hazel was speaking at Augustus‘ funeral. So when she actually reads the eulogy for her (What else…..I hope she likes hers), maybe she realizes that he had become her life, so she dies. He tries to speak to Hazel, but Hazel, devastated by Augustus’s death and burial, refuses to listen, telling him that he is an alcoholic and she doesn’t want to hear what he has to say.
Hazel seems to love Augustus most when he is not acting – is not putting on a show of coolness or feeling the need to save someone, but reading to her or experiencing glee at a plane flying. For the time being, however, Hazel has still decided to keep him at a safe distance. There are hints at the end that she is not far from the end.
